Introduction
Throughout the United States, federal
and state laws are designed to:
-
identify and correct workplace hazards
(worker safety)
-
provide workers information and training
in proper procedures to minimize their actual harm from those hazards (worker
right to know)
-
This system of laws has developed over
the past century beginning with mine and industrial safety initiatives
in the late 1800s. They presently cover the full range of potential hazards,
including electrical and mechanical safety, fire prevention and response,
and potential exposures to chemicals and disease-causing agents.
